XMP Metadata Missing!

I'm using GIMP 2.10.18/Linux Mint 20 and it is NOT exporting EXIF metadata, even though the editor itself can "View Metadata" with no problems. This is just saving jpg as jpg. And I doubled-checked my Preferences -> Image Import & Export -> Export Policies: they are all set correctly. I noticed this when I upload my jpg to sites like inaturalist and wikipedia; normally they can pick up the date of the pic from the metadata but now nothing
