There are a few ways but have another look at using the colour curve tool.
Drag the curve down to the bottom right.
That leaves a jaggy image (other ways such as threshold do the same) so introduce some anti-aliasing. The Gimp anti-aliasing is very basic so go into gmic search for anti-aliasing and use one of the filters.
