Their claims of "synthesis" appear a bit suspect.
I tried and failed 3 times last night using a pic of the cartoon character Elmer Fudd, expecting a Nikita Kruschev
likeness as a result, all three resulting in hard fails.
So, I thought I'd start with something a little more human looking, that got the following result.
I suspect they've likely got more of a huge data base of faces, and matched using "image search" style parameters. Could be wrong about that, but it's hard to believe they synthesized the result based upon the sample that I provided?
