As far as I know there is no macOS Gimp help package available.

Thanks for the link – it's a very thorough read. It should be good for Gimp 2.10.24 (installed on a division of my iMac running El Capitan). Maybe it can also help with Gimp 2.8.22 (on another partition, running Snow Leopard).
Still, installed Help for offline use might be better for tips on the fly, etc.
So, for Mac Help packages, I followed a link on Gimp's download page, to:

At the bottom are hefty files (over 150 mb each) for 2.8.2 & 2.10.0. They are incomprehensible to me - lots of weird files and folders. I guess they are meant for compilers. Can anyone confirm this?

I figured they were probably trustworthy, and tried out a GIMP-2.8-User-Manual-en.zip. It was a standard installation package, easy for any Mac user, and the Console told me "Gimpmanual" & "GIMP 2.8 User Manual (en)" were installed. But GIMP > Preferences > Help System found no user manual installed locally. Nor could I track the files down myself. Maybe they're invisible; maybe they are too old...
Maybe I need to check if there's a language conflict (different species of English do that, I am told).
How can I find out where the Help files are installed?
P.S. Is GIMP 2.10.24 an over-reach for El Capitan (macOS 10.11.6), since it supports macOS 10.12 Sierra or over?
