It depends on how accurate you want the isolated object to be : rough is fast, fine is a lot of work. It also depends on how much the foreground differs from the background and also, a complicated shape requires a lot of work, a simple shape is easy. Sometimes one can do it with one tool, sometimes a combination of several tools is necessary. A good advice for a complicated background is to remove it roughly before starting the fine work.
