(I‘ve got an old macbook pro retina mid 2014 running big sur (11.5.2))
not sure if its showing, heres the link aswell: https://imgur.com/a/Xujo3pF
Looks like a ofnt that has no support for ASCII characters.
Reinstalling rarely fixes things, better start with a fresh profile.
First of all, my folder is called 2.0 instead of 2.10, is that normal? My Gimp version is definitively 2.10...
Renaming the folder to .disabled (i followed the websites instruction precisely) just creates upon reopening another one that is even worse, it takes away the whole menu bar and changes some numbers into chinese characters. And whatever i do, once i rename the original folder, upon opening gimp it‘ll always create a new folder with just the empty font folder inside...
I‘m pretty sure tho, that you are right with the problem being some sort of a missing font/unsupported font...

Can you tell us more about those "sources", which ones?
The original (https://www.gimp.org/downloads/) and a german website (https://www.gimp24.de/gimp_download_mac.php), i‘m pretty sure its the exact same thing... i havent tried installing via torrent yet... i don‘t think that would make a difference tho...
