You will probably have to give an example of your image, however I do not think bump-mapping will be the answer.
It is all about light and shadow to give an appearance of depth. No depth, no shadows. Floating over the surface? Probably too much shadow in the wrong place.
You could try something like this.
The background, this one plain, with a layer mask to give a gradient (of lightness) top left to bottom right.
A regular Gimp light and shadow drop shadow.
The drop shadow layer with a layer mask and the gradient reverse of previous. That gives more emphasis to the shadow in the lighter region. Does it look more realistic? - maybe, all in the eye of the beholder
