Have you tried
exporting to a different location than the original
exporting in a different format or saving as a Gimp .xcf as a check.
turning off options such as thumbnail in the jpeg export options.
Are these large images ?
You said in your first post Gimp 2.10.4 That is a very old version, is that correct?
