Can you turn the area you want to colour into a path? Just that area. Make sure you have 'snap to active path' checked, should work for you then. Active paths show as red and also will not show once you export or save your finished project.
Also while in path design mode the tool options will give you the option to stroke your path and fill it. You will need to change your path into a selection to get it to meet up at the end and then select to path then do your stroke and fill. Oh and change your foreground colour to the one you want to use.
