Not really an anwer to your question but as sallyanne mentioned, if you make paths arround the areas, you can convert the paths to  selections ( Select / From Path) and color the areas. Make a new layer before you color the area. If you want a sharp edge, you can stroke the area border with the color from the area. A quick example.
