I would like to add here, for reference, that those of us who use GIMP to create grayscale "elevation maps" where darker/lighter pixel values represent lower/higher (or v.v.) elevations (to be carved or printed) regularly trip over this behavior.
Often having to resort back to experimentation to try to find again "that which once worked," most recently I've discovered that "what I want" for this purpose is an image which reports the following under Image->Properties:
Color space: Grayscale: GIMP built-in D65 Grayscale with sRGB TRC
This can be set under Image->Precision.
The "sRGB" always throws me because I start by assuming that, because I want a "grayscale" image to represent a grayscale elevation map, I must NOT want sRGB which is what is needed.
I also use Legacy mode for layers.
