Not sure why it didn't work for you. Maybe there wasn't enough red. So I added a little more red with the curves tool. Then using saturation, got this.
You have to be careful how much curves (or level) you use or the whole will become red.
Also if you have the plugin GMIC-qt and your overall planet gets too much red - (purply looking). Use the filter in there called 'unpurple'. Default should be enough. It is under the category repair
