Does Windows 11 hide its font files?

  • With your file explorer, navigate to C:\users\{your id}\AppData\local\fontconfig
  • Erase the directory contents (in partocumar the cache subdirectory)
On next start, Gimp will rebuild its font list.

I did try that tonight, just to satisfy myself that I'm leaving no loose ends. In AppData\local\fontconfig I renamed the subdirectory 'cache' to 'xcache'. When I started GIMP again, the Fonts Dialog showed (as before) only the two Rockwell fonts that I'd downloaded from the non-Microsoft site and copied into AppData\roaming\GIMP\2.10\fonts -- not the five Rockwell Nova fonts from the Microsoft Store. The AppData\local\fontconfig directory now shows  two subdirectories, 'cache' (very recent) and 'xcache'.

In other news -- I happened to Google up a GIMP 3.0 User Manual, 05/02/2025; I gather that it's the latest version there is. In II. How do I Become a GIMP Wizard? > 9. Text Management >  2. Text > 2.1. Adding Fonts, I see essentially the same information as in the GIMP 2.10 manual. If someone in GIMP development is already aware of the differences in font management under Windows 11, the information doesn't seem to have found its way into the manual yet. Undecided
