What is the gamma encoding and why are my color computations wrong?

But if you import it in Gimp and zoom in Gimp (or scale it...) its color won't change.

At 500% in my browser (Chrome) it stays as red and yellow checks. No time did it turn just red

It's the zoom out. Try spinning the mouse wheel in the other direction while hovering the mouse pointer over the webpage and holding down the ctrl key.
