Using File > Open as layers you can add images as new layers (one by one but you can also select multiple file in one go).
To move them you can use the move tool (

You can align them easily using guides
You can scale and move them to fit any space using the scale tool (
), probably with Keep aspect set to avoid stretching/squishing.
Don't forget to save as XCF from time to time.
