Is there a direct correllation between 1200x1200 dpi and say 300x300 ppi that is, one four times the other ? That dpi setting should have no effect on size other than as a "quality" setting - you are getting more ink droplets into each pixel in the image.
I remember with that old Canon I had it would not use above 600 dpi which is medium quality at best. I do not think you are going to find if it is a bug in the printer driver or Gimp. You can report as a bug - "print preview does not match actual print size" to the Gimp developers. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues but do not expect much, it is a very specific problem.
Yes, the printed image size appears to be proportional to the DPI (see values in my first post) which, I understand, is merely a measure of how much ink is used per square inch and should not be related to the physical dimensions of the printed image (which it is, hence, my problem).
