I agree with rich on this. DistroWatch page hit rankings on the right hand side shows Mint at the top. The Mate desktop is also a good choice.
I recommend saving what you discover and what works in a file(s) somewhere because with Linux the information doesn't change just because somebody thinks you need newer hardware.
