Technically it works, but just like the Pixls Appimage plugins like Felimage, Resynthesize, Plasma2, and probably more plugins/scripts don't work.
It is the pixlus appimage, just that the link goes to the latest version.

When it eventually supersedes Gimp 2.8.x you will be able to get it. The only thing is 'easily' Most probably you will need a linux version update.
I use Gimp 2.8.22 from a ppa. The default version in 'buntu 16.04 is still Gimp 2.8.16, not exactly up-to-date there.
