I watched this again and experimented with the Difference/Exclusion blend modes in Gimp. This is easy to do, just have a base color layer and another image above it and select the Mode. Here are my results
There is almost no change between Exclusion and Difference. The base layer has a major effect on the finished image. White gives more of a photo negative effect. This can be applied to animation streams with 'Interleave layers' by you know who
