Easy to use is always a problem. So many graphics users expect a single-click-n-fix solution. That is not Gimp but at least Gimp is free in money terms if not in learning effort.
There is a Gimp plugin gmic_gimp_qt that comes with hundreds of filters. It is worth installing. http://www.gmic.eu

Getting a good blend of colours really depends on a bit of artistic skill but have a search for suitable palette files especially skin tones.
