Otherwise
It is very annoying, the few tools I have to dump the layers to individual files and the reduced transparency is again removed. Saving each edited (-> colour-mode -> unoptimised -> resized and repositioned) as an .xcf keeps everything.
The best I came up with is very tedious, just as well only 24 layers.
The equivalent animation layer from each .xcf are merged. Lots of drag-and drop from one image to another. Merge Down can be assigned a keyboard shortcut.
The resulting 24 (merged) layers then combined with the background. I used SaulGoodes script for this.
see: http://chiselapp.com/user/saulgoode/repo...pt-fu/home in the animation section.
That got me to here: https://i.imgur.com/CU1m9FH.gif
That looks good, thanks, I tried it!
I am also interested with spinning a static image around its Y axis, just like this guy is spinning "my text" around itself. http://www.gimptalk.com/index.php?/topic...ning-logo/
His tutorial is from 11 years ago though, and other tutorials on youtube seem to focus on the spinning globe effect in filters > animation > . There is also other fancy stuff in filters > animation > , but nothing as basic as the spinning I prefer. I even found a website which does it very quick, unfortunately it is 40 frames max, therefore the animation does not look so smooth. https://icons8.com/animizer/en/animate-static-image
Any thoughts?

The gimptalk thread is using an old plugin GAP (Gimp Animation Plugin) you can still get it, this is the usual package that comes with some documentation and examples.

However it is not easy to use. There are a couple of guys on gimpchat.com who are interested in animations, it might be worth asking questions there.
Rotating text around text - not easy with Gimp, This is using a raytracing/modelling application Art Of Illusion, still a pain to set up. Had to reduce the frames by half to 80 and scale down to get a smallish gif size for this example https://i.imgur.com/juF8GpK.gif Really needs the full 160 frames to be smooth.
I think for animations like this the application Blender is probably most used these days. I hate the interface, so no examples from me.

Yes, I tried, the GAP was impossible to install for a non linux person like me, so I will give animation blender a try, you are talking about this one, right?https://www.blender.org/

That is the one. Also a portable version

Not easy to use, however there are plenty of tutorials / demos available
