COPYing Layers

Hi everybody :

  I'm running GIMP 2.10......Windows 10 64-bit.
  I have a "drawing" of two leaves, joined on the bottom. This is on the background 
  layer.  How do I COPY this to a new layer (with the purpose of rotating /flipping the
  copy ?  And then, using OPACITY, to adjust the two layers into the correct 
  position. After that, use the the FLATTEN command.
  Advice ?

Select the white backgroung with the 'Fuzzy Select Tool'
Inverse the selection : 'Select / Invert'
Then 'Edit / Paste as / New Layer'

Another option is to  copy the layer to a new layer
Then  : Colours /  Colour to Alpha

All sorts of methods and all basic stuff that you need to get familiar with.

A work-flow might be

1. View -> Show All (on)
2. Layer -> Duplicate Layer
3. Colors -> Color to Alpha (to remove BG) Set the opacity slider to about 0.5
4. Flip tool -> Click in canvas to flip
5. Move tool and move into position (toggle move the active layer if you need to)
6. Image -> Fit Canvas to Layers (your original canvas size is too small)
7. Crop Tool -> Crop to size
8. Image -> Merge Visible Layers
9. Layer -> Transparency -> Remove Alpha Channel
10. View -> Show All (off)
