When I try to draw a selection box on the image it says "Cannot subtract from an empty selection."
Why is that and how do I make it stop?
I found the box to check in the rectangular select tool box. Problem fixed thank you.

Actually Blighty's post #3 is the real answer. Your action has just reset the Selection tool to Replace mode which is its default.

Thats not the one. Expecting one of these (and some others), depending on actual selection tool used:
So now I'm wondering if you didn't fall victim of a disappearing Tool options dialog, in which case see here to fix that issue first.

I had the same problem, fixed it by deleting one layer (it was on the right bar, about the middle of it).
