Then for the rest, have you used the other available options ? Turn compact sliders off. Increase the layer dialogue size. Tools, this the brushes large size as a list. A bit tedious as you have to treat each dock individually (only once though)

The result from your image looks like what I'm aiming for, but the instructions are unclear to me. Do I have to a.) turn compact sliders off and b.) Increase the layer dialogue size in gimp preferences, in the gtkrc file or somehwere else? I found these options nowhere in preferences and am a bit overwhelmed by the gtkrc file. 
Also, please expand on what you mean with "Tools, this the brushes large size as a list." 

Sorry if this reply was a bit bothersome but I really don't understand.
