In my Gimp for PC, version 2.10.38 (revision 1), in the upper left corner under the command row ‘File Edit View…’ when I hover over it, the prompt ‘Drop images files here to open them’ appears, and under the command bar, thumbnails of the open images or newly created files appear. This feature is very useful to me, however, on my laptop, the same version of Gimp doesn’t have it, and I would like to know if there is some way to activate it that I haven’t found.

Look in "Edit/Preferences/Toolbox" then in the "Appearance" section make sure that "Show GIMP logo (drag-and-drop target)" is selected. You do, of course need to have the toolbox displayed to see this.

I have followed the steps you indicated but it does not work (Edit-Preferences-Toolbox-Appearance and Show GIMP logo selected). There is no difference when the GIMP logo is unselected. Coincidentally, this morning my wife switched the laptop from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and I haven't mentioned it before. I don't know if that could be the reason it's not working.
