It is a matter of personal preference. Ofnuts has a good point about the non-destructive capabilities of RT. However, in my opinion, both RT and Darktable have appalling interfaces,
If you just need to get an image into Gimp then nufraw has the simplest interface. Unfortunately the standalone Windows latest nufraw package still does not integrate into a gimp.org Gimp (just tried it - NBG). The Partha Gimp 2.10.12 has nufraw already integrated. http://www.partha.com
Something like this, Select image from Gimp, choose 16 bit output, ok it which then opens in Gimp (and a lot faster than RT) https://i.imgur.com/FOsZynh.jpg
