Thanks to all for very helpful suggestions. I thought I had searched several fora (including GimpChat) for solutions, but obviously missed this one. I That sounds like exactly what happened to me. have an imminent deadline and need a quick solution, so perhaps wasn't as thorough as I should have been.
I'll apply this solution - as I understand it, Gimp would apply fonts in the order of the folders listed in its Fonts setting, so if I put the Gimp fonts folder above others, those fonts would be applied. I'll try out variations, in any case.
