GIMP 2.10 no scanning option
#1
Hi,

i'm a Kubuntu user of GIMP 2.10.12.
After installing gimp 2.10.12 using the flatpak feature, i discovered that i can not anymore import an image from my scanner as usually.

There is no more File->Create->Xsane or File->Create->scanner/device_xxx

How can i import image directly from scanner ?

thx

Not possible. The flatpak is sandboxed and does not come with the necessary lib.. files for SANE.

I used to use a flatpak and tried any number of ways to get my scanner working. Ended up keeping a Gimp 2.8 to use for the several plugins that flatpak fails to support.

Now using kubuntu 18.04 and moved on to the Gimp 2.10.12 from PPA otto-kesselgulasch/ubuntu/gimp
Whether Stettin can keep 'buntu Bionic updated for future versions of Gimp is another matter.

i used it before but i always got the following error:

so i upgrade the GEGL lib to required version, but nothing changed...i still get the same error

edit: removed comment on libgegl version - need more info on kubuntu version.

Edit: I think I see a possible problem. Are you using kubuntu Artful (17.10) ? That is the only 'buntu release in the PPA that has that version of GEGL 0.4 but gets you Gimp 2.10.4 not 2.10.12

You can try emailing the maintainer Thorsten Stettin - however the usual response is ...nothing.

I use Kubuntu 19.04 and not 17.04.
by the way, i was able to solve the issue by:
1. installing gegl 0.4.16 manually
2. removing GIMP, xsane and gegl
3. reinstalling GIMP, xsane and gegl 0.4.16 manually
in this case gegl 0.4.16 is installed and gimp 2.10.12 works correctly with scanning features as under version 2.08 of GIMP

if you just install the package gegl 0.4.16 it will not work. For unknown reason GIMP think 0.4.14 is newer version than 0.4.16 and therefore do not launch GIMP.

you have to remove everything together and reinstall everything together to make it works.

You can go here and check the package details for yourself https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasc.../+packages libgegl 0.4.14 is older than libgegl 0.4.16

Uninstalling your old packages first, is one way to go.

Info on installing from the PPA - for 'buntu 18.04 but applicable to other versions https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Gimp-2...-18-04-LTS

Remember to install gimp-python and mypaint brushes if required.
