Gradient accross shapes

I All,

Hoping you can help.

I have an image consisting of multiple shapes of a certain colour.  The shapes are separated by empty space. I was wondering if it is possible to gradient fill these shapes as a whole? so the gradient spreads accross all of the shapes?

Looking forward to your replies and some help (hopefully :S)

If the space is transparent, just set the alpha-lock on the layer and make a gradient across the whole layer.
