How to Create Outline Effect with Drop Shadow?

Maybe you got that idea from Photoshop. I guess you can use a layerstyle to make an outline and the live preview might suggest that its a good idea.
An Outer Glow for example could be "hardened" with 'Range'.
But its kind of joyriding the equipment, especially when there are better ways (like stroke path).

Also "Layerstyles" work a bit differently in Gimp.

You could theoretically "compress" a blurred circle with an alpha curve, but its an odd workflow.
You cant predict the thickness of your outline very well.

Hi. I tried curving Outer Glow effect that gave me blurry shadow of object but you were right, I can't control the density of transparency/outline thickness very well and it didn't came out dense enough with curve graphic from your screenshot:

Yeah, the cartoon looks like it was drawn in a vector program, judging by the lineart, so the outline was probably a stroke.
Which is best imitated by stroking a path in Gimp.
As already demonstrated.

The alpha shaped blur was just for "educational" purposes.
Knowing this technique can be quite useful for other stuff.
