You can see the SD folder in Finder, does click-n-drag on an image file into Gimp (either the canvas or the tool box) open the image or raise an error message ? It might be a security / permissions issue with Mac.
No help to you, but in linux with SD card in the built-in card reader it is no problem. Your SD card is in a card reader ? or is it camera plugged into USB socket ? or wireless connection ?
edit: Have to eat my words Depends on the camera sd card. This one raises an error, so a copy into a local folder is needed.
20 second example https://i.imgur.com/lZbvyVK.mp4 but again a different file manager and all works. Worth experimenting but by all means go back to Affinity.
