Screenshot options

Shocked
After reading rich2205's post at:

https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Color-...5#pid30585

The very practical way in which the area was selected (demonstrated in Link --➤ https://i.imgur.com/4QTyMtL.mp4 ) left me thinking: "Wow, how has this never been so easy for me!? "

So today I decided to try this new way to get a screenshoot, but I found that my Gimp doesn't have the same tools as those used by rich2005.   Confused

There is simply no option "Select a region to grab".

01-Screenshot in the rich2005 Gimp;

02-Screenshot in my Gimp.

Would this option come from a Gimp configuration? From a script/plugin?

How could I make this option available in my Gimp?  Huh

Thanks for clarification

Possibly OS-dependent. Rich is on Linux. Personally, despite being also on Linux, I don't use Gimp (which doesn't work too well anyway),  and instead use Spectacle that has interesting features, such as remembering the captured screen coordinates from shot to shot, so you can easily document a series of steps.

Yeah.. certainly OS dependent, I'm on Linux as well GIMP works flawlessly, and that options File ➤ Create ➤ Screenshot... I just tried is even funny as you can open another "Screenshot" dialog to take a screenshot of that very screenshot dialog and even more.

Below I opened 2 dialog and took the screenshot with a third dialog  Big Grin

I never use this GIMP feature, though, because I'm using Ksnip as I just click on it in Plank and it automatically is in a Select region mode, and it has some utilities like drawing arrows, writing text, auto numbering and so on, now I might use it time to time for a very simple screenshot Wink

@Krikor

No change in Windows Gimp 2.99 - still the cut down screencapture options.

You probably have your own favourite alternative screencapture. For Windows users, plenty of alternatives here: https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?sc=184

This one Lightscreen might be worth a look. https://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=1959

There is a portable alternative when installing, which might fit in with your portable Gimp(s). I have tried it in a Win10 VM and it seems to work ok, capturing an area and sending image to a folder on a storage drive.

Possibly OS-dependent...

Looks like I'm the only one here using Gimp to handle screenshots.

I wear use this procedure:
1- The "PrintScrn SysRq" key on the keyboard;
2- Then with Gimp ➤ File - Create - From clipboard (Shift+Ctrl+v).
3- Then edit using Gimp.

Practically 100% of my screenshots are this way.

I have a Chrome extension for screenshots. But I only use it in the case where I need to scroll the screen to capture an area larger than my monitor. (due to disuse, this extension has been disabled for perhaps more than a year).

Based on your suggestion - Spectacle, Ksnip and Lightscreen.

Spectacle is for Linux, so I looked for options at https://alternativeto.net/software/kde-spectacle/

Features such as OCR (optical Character Recognition) support, Portable, Stealth, License: GPL V2, Similar/Alternative: LightScreen, Sharex (Spectacle), upload to Imgur, scrolling (full page captures) among other features made me initially opt for Greenshot.

I downloaded the No-Installer.zip version on one of my usb flash-drives and the first test was positive (fast, simple and intuitive).

Now it's a question of adaptation or not.

Thank you all!

Big thumb up @Krikor, I was not aware about Ksnip ability to upload directly on imgur.com, that's a hell of a feature, no more saving on my desktop, just straight out from Ksnip and it does copy the link of imgur directly in my clipboard, what a time saving!
Again thanks a lot Krikor for the wake up
