Not doing anything wrong, that is the way it works. If you want text above the path put a return (enter) after the text (before gives below the path)

Right click context in the paths dialogue. Does not use the text tool. Read the docs file that comes with it.

EDIT: To be honest, I would just add another path and adjust until correct. A curved path does not need lots of nodes. A node each end and pull out the handles to adjust is the best way. Keep the text 'box' tight ie. dynamic mode
