I feel like the answer must be simple but I can't find it..I increased the canvas and it rendered the original area in a square and anything outside of that it doesn't paint on. How do I make it where it's all considered the same space?

In the menu go to..
Layer > Layer to Image Size

When you increase the canvas size there are options for handling layers.
