You maybe confusing layer visibility with a transparent or alpha background applied to a layer. Wink

Can you give an example: I know in a previous post you were unable to attach an image.  Details are shown in the attachments link,  top of the forum or   https://www.gimp-forum.net/misc.php?action=help&hid=11

Take a screenshot and crop it down to a suitable size that still shows the issue. Gimp can also screenshot itself. File -> Create -> Screenshot.  Export as a jpeg - saves on bandwidth.

You said you were using Gimp 2.10.14, so I pulled that old version out just in case the default themes were different but I can not see any "background" to the layer visibility icon, even when you mouse hover over it is just a slight outline.

Are you using a non-standard theme, maybe something originally for Gimp 2.8  ?

whburling: Hi! Do you perhaps have the layer's tagged? If so, then that would put a backgroundcolor behind the visibility icon.

Right-click on the layer and go to "Color Tags" - if a color is selected, then you can just switch it to "None".
