I want to use MS Windows as my operating system in the future, so I need to buy a new computer because my current computer is not compatible with Windows 11. I want to use my current computer as a second computer and want to install Linux. I downloaded Linux Mint and Ubuntu, put the operating systems on a memory stick and tried them. Both are user-friendly, but I only could easily connect to the internet (wifi) with Ubuntu OS. My current computer has a 2.90 gigaherz Intel i7-7700T processor with 4 cores and 128 GB SSD. I want to use this computer as a Windows OS-oriented and thinking user. I visited some Linux forums, but there are always different types of Linux suggested. So I ask the question here: Ubuntu or Mint? Confused

Linux, as well as different distributions (Debian / RedHat / Slackware) and their spin-offs Ubuntu / Fedora... There are also different Desktop Envirements (DE) - Gnome / KDE / LXDE ....

While I am a die-hard KDE user going from Mepis -> PCLinuxOS -> kubuntu I think the best for a beginner is Mint with probably the MATE desktop, It has a nice clean menu-ing system. It is based on ubuntu LTS (long term) versions and has some benefits over ubuntu no SNAP installations, but can also use Ubuntu PPA's (for say Gimp 3).

There should not be any problem with wireless - did it connect ? Once installed might be easier.

Rich, thanks.  Looking for some more information and now I learned that my new Mint MATE would be 'Vanessa', nice.  Big Grin

I agree with rich on this. DistroWatch page hit rankings on the right hand side shows Mint at the top. The Mate desktop is also a good choice.
I recommend saving what you discover and what works in a file(s) somewhere because with Linux the information doesn't change just because somebody thinks you need newer hardware. Smile 

I hope Linux is a happy experience for you because it's such a great philosophy to be a part of.
