To Wacom or not to Wacom
Posted by: Maximus Heronimus - 05-04-2020, 12:53 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (4)

Hello my friends,

currently i've got a vintage Bamboo one S

doing it's job on Gimp with Xubuntu as OS
it's pretty beat up from use, and i'm looking for a succesor,

what would be a nice upgrade?

i'm kinda wow'd by the high prices,
and if there is a "B" class brand who does the same as my old Wacom that would be great...

the use of my wacom is without any extra stuff installed, just using it as main "mouse" and edit tool in Gimp

i've plugged it in and it worked... no need for fancy stuff yet, but due the small size it's kinda *bleep* for really small stuff

does the size also increase the ease of use when going bigger? like if i have to do small stuff  i've got to force my hand to work
if i'm going as big as possible does the tiny stuff become easier due just workspace?

add stripes to a bus image
Posted by: dannysprogis - 05-04-2020, 06:46 AM - Forum: General questions - Replies (6)

Greetings,

I am very new to Gimp and really enjoy the functions that I am able to use but i have a small project that I don't even know how to begin and would really appreciate some help with please.

I have a PNG image of a white bus that I need to paint some graphics on. Basically I need some orange stripes diagonally on the bus. I would like the stripes to be solid and evenly spaced diagonally on the body work and transparent over the windows and of course it must look like a paint job on the bus.

Can anyone help me get started as I don't even know what functions I need to use and Googling and YouTubing isn't giving me the answers i want because i don't know what to search for.

Please see the blank bus attached and a basic idea (painted bus sample)  of what i am aiming to achieve.

Thank you in advance.

Danny

Semi-transparency blends differently before and after PNG-export
Posted by: M1rch - 05-03-2020, 06:34 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

Hi. Sorry for the generic title but I couldn't explain the problem I'm facing in a few words.

I'm facing this weird problem: I start with an image (a hand drawn picture made with Sketchbook, exported in photoshop format and imported in Gimp 2.10.18) that only contains a layer with semi-transparent black drawings, and a background white layer. Gimp imports it correctly, or at least everything looks good. If I hide the white layer and I export only the black-and-transparent layer into PNG, and then I open the exported image I have this behaviour: the image look the same, but when I add again a white background layer, the image blends differently with it, it looks washy, with less contrast and with lighter blacks. I attach an example to illustrate the behaviour.

As you can see in the picture below, the exported PNG looks the same until I add a background again.

Does anyone knows what's happening here?

  Discoloration using pencil tool
Posted by: TinGamerTV - 05-02-2020, 05:45 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

     Look at the attachment.

This is what happens in GIMP when I try to draw. At the beginning there's a slight discoloration using the pencil tool. How do I disable this?

  Fade image to white
Posted by: Thorski - 05-02-2020, 05:23 PM - Forum: General questions - Replies (2)

I am trying to get background images for a PPT and need the image to fade from solid or nearly solid white on the left to no white about mid 16:9 image (I am overlaying blue text). I keep trying various combinations of settings, but the best I can do still ends up with a discernible edge at the end of the fade. Or, there is a thin white line near the end  of the fade.

Extract Text from text file script?
Posted by: Zero01 - 05-02-2020, 07:33 AM - Forum: Extending the GIMP - Replies (5)

I had a text file extracting script at one point, lost it now but I seem to remember there were a lot of options including which font, fontsize/colour, margins etc to use to display it in Gimp, very handy script, but unable to locate - hoping someone out there knows what I mean and has a copy/link to download - Thanks a lot

  Resynthesizer install

I was told that this plugin is very useful. However, the above link directs to GIMP Registry which says it is closed now.

It will be great to find out how to use it in Kubuntu 20.04. Thanks.

Some plugins based on machine learning for Gimp
Posted by: Ofnuts - 05-01-2020, 08:31 PM - Forum: Watercooler - No Replies

It used to be called AI, now it"s machine-learning. Some applicationd to image processing with Gimp.

Demo video (warning, somewhat nausea-inducing): https://youtu.be/U9k1k7IpAlg

Codehttps://github.com/kritiksoman/GIMP-ML

Warnings:
  • Very experimental (read: just for the geeks among you, if you struggle installing a script look elsewhere)
  • Linux and OSX only for the time being
  • 2GB download (1.1GBML data, about 800MB of Python extensions)
  • Zero doc for the time being beyond the project's home page and a few demo videos

My own tries with the deblur:

Before: Picking  a picture where the inaccurate focus competes with some unskilled-panning-induced motion blur (a rather frequent occurrence in y collections)

After: Some parts (markings) are clearly less blurry. Plus it was a trick picture given that the propeller is blurry (if it isn't, it seems that the plane's engine has stalled).
