I'm using Gimp 2.8 on Linux Mint 18.1 Serena 64-bit. After I start it, even if I just stay in the main screen and don't load any files, the software uses 2.8GB of RAM. I have tried to change the values in Preferences > Environment to amounts way below the default, but the memory usage keeps the same.
As I have 4GB RAM on my laptop and the OS uses around 1GB, this leaves me with almost no RAM for other applications. I have used GIMP on Windows before and I don't remind such behavior. Anyone could pelase give me tips on how to make GIMP use less RAM?
I do not know when this came in precisely, some time ago but I just noticed it.
The Text-along-Path is improved. If the path is a little on the short side the text-path no longer shoots off to the corner. It means you can be a little off in your estimate of path length.
So i moved my forum to gimplearn.net as some of your may know by now.
I searched for "site:gimplearn.net" and it shows pages of results so that's good.
But i search for "gimp forum" and it's not on the list bakon.ca is still shown on page 2 or 3.
Do you know if google would detect that it's moved and list it if so about how long (do you know)?
Or would google be like hey this is just a copy of bakon.ca and black list it as copied site and toss it somewhere super low ranking and not even appear on list when searching for "gimp forum".
Anyone know or have a good guess as to what google might do? ofnuts? anyone?
Hi, all. I am a new gimper (first gimp post) and I have watched videos and attempted to bend text to a simple curved path. In the videos and tutorials, the text does exactly that. When I do it, the text bends as if around a 3d cylinder instead of simply maintaining one font size around a 2d curve. I assume there must be some simple setting but I can't seem to find it and I have googled everything I can think of for an answer but haven't found it anywhere. Your help would be appreciated immensely. Thank you.

This is the mode used in printing. These are the colors in the ink cartridges in your printer. It is
the mode used in painting and in all the objects around us, where light is reflected, not emmitted.
Objects absorb part of the light waves and we see only the reflected part. Note that the cones in
our eyes see this reflected light in RGB mode. An object appears Red because Green and Blue have
been absorbed. Since the combination of Green and Blue is Cyan, Cyan is absorbed when you
add Red. Conversely, if you add Cyan, its complementary color, Red, is absorbed. This system is
subtractive. If you add Yellow, you decrease Blue, and if you add Magenta, you decrease Green.
It would be logical to think that by mixing Cyan, Magenta and Yellow, you would subtract Red,
Green and Blue, and the eye would see no light at all, that is, Black. But the question is more
complex. In fact, you would see a dark brown. That is why this mode also has a Black value, and
why your printer has a Black cartridge. It is less expensive that way. The printer doesn’t have to
mix the other three colors to create an imperfect Black, it just has to add Black.
Color depth
I did not follow the 'add Red' bit. White light is incident on paper and the ink-pigments absorb certain colors and reflect certain other colors - therefore our eyes only receive certain wavelengths - this is subtractive. In a computer monitor, RGB is generated by phosphor excitation and mixed and goes straight into our eye.
Green + Blue = Cyan #got it.
Cyan falls on paper+pigment and is absorbed #got it
left over wavelengths are now travelling to my eye..
so how is Red 'added'???? He does 'adding' of colors and I don't get that.. Could someone explain it clearly.

Yes, I'm selecting the layer, selection is set to none (or all - same result) and yes, I checked 20 other things that have been documented in answer to this question from others.
I select the layer, but when I click on the image with the paintbrush, the focus on the layer is lost. Does that shed any light on the issue?
The previous thing I did on this image was adding some text. Could I somehow be locked into text selection even though I said select none?
Hi, I want to make a mock up T-shirt in GIMP with designs I have prepared.
I've seen videos that mostly demonstrate how to put a logo or a design on like the center of the shirt, but I want to create something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGsi11GkTK0&t=190s (I have also attached an image).
I have image files that include designs for the sleeve, the front and back of the shirt, the collar, etc, but am unsure how to put it together like the image attached. My understanding so far is that I would need to download a mock t-shirt template compatible with GIMP and create layers for each part/design of the shirt. But I'm not sure of the in-betweens or if that's correct overall.
I was wondering about how to change a few things in Gimp.
How can I disable or make the preview thumbs smaller in the dialog windows, such as Undo History?
How can I replace elements such as Opacity in the Layers dialog window with an input field instead of a that huge vertical bar?
How can I disable the thumbs or image preview in the tab of the workspace and have the name of the file instead?
How can I remove the text found at the bottom of the Tool bar saying "You can drop dockable dialogs here".
I have a Sierra operating system on my MacBook Pro and followed the tried and true procedure, of placing pictures side by side in a New image background, exactly the way I've done it time and again, but now it doesn't work that way any longer. I attached a screen shot of what appears when I attempt to move images, with my cursor and the 'moving'[attachment=561] icon clicked on, which doesn't work. There are two weird little symbols next to my white cursor that move along with it on the page. One is a tiny serrated black circle with a line through it and the other is a little box that has itsy-bitsy loops all around its inner sides, which makes it look a bit like a picture frame with a white center. The photos won't budge from being piled on top of one another no matter what I do. A total of three pictures are layered over each other, because I can't move them, even though there's more than enough image space on the New white backdrop I created for them...??? Can you, or anyone, figure out what has changed to make this process impossible to perform and the features/functions that worked previously now inoperable? I make comparisons, between similar items, on a regular basis and need to be able to employ the side by side picture technique for that purpose. Please help rectify the problem I'm having. Thanks...
