Saw something about this in here but cannot find anything now  
I downloaded ufraw so I could work on raw photos as well as jpgs, the program has a link in it to open up in gimp but nothing happens when I click on it. Saw there was some trouble with it so I downloaded the nufraw, says it can be used as a plugin to gimp?
Where do I put it? it is a 'tar.gz' file

I have made some icons.

I have placed them on the desktop.

When I hover the house over the icons, I note a square shape around the icons, but, in a few of them, I see a larger rectangle. I have cropped all the images.

I would like them all to be uniform.

Advice please.

Thanks for putting up this Forum.

I have the text letter O in a layer(see attached), and I filled in the center almost completely (with pencil tool), but left a little unfilled, so it would look similar to a round head with a smile(see attached), however it looks kind of like a jagged smile.
Can you suggest a way to re-do so that the "smile" looks a little smoother (not so jagged)?

I don't know if I'm missing something but there doesn't appear to be any logic or sure-fire means of getting the mouse cursor to switch to the little 'up arrow' icon which allows you to quickly change the values of brush size, opacity etc.

The other options are using the 'up and down' buttons on the slider, or to kind of drag it with the '|' icon, the latter of which is very fiddly and ineffective.

As you hover the mouse cursor over the value bar it will occasionally switch to the 'up arrow', but as I say there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to when it does this.

Am I missing something or is this normal behaviour?

Try as I may, I still cannot create circles.

I start to use the tool then hold down shift, but I still see an allipse. I see the same when holding down control!

Previous post reminded me of this. A friend from school days now lives on the west coast of USA and has a very nice boat. Also bought a equally nice boat on the east coast USA so that he can sail around the Virgin Islands.

Had to remind him that I kept my boat in the back yard.

A caveat:
Gimp comes from UNIX origins and printing in MS Windows is an add-on to interface with a Windows printer driver. Since printer driver software comes from the printer manufacturer, sometimes there is a less-than-perfect match.

If you have problems printing from within Gimp then export your work as an image and use some other Windows application for printing.

Whatever you do, when starting a graphic for eventual printing, it might be small, say a birthday card or it might be large, a poster, it is vital that the initial set up matches the overall aim of the project.





- Setup a new canvas at 300 pixels-per-inch for printing
- Use a preset Gimp template size.
- The Gimp Image menu -> Print Size dialogue
- The Gimp File -> Page Setup and Print dialogues
- The difference between high resolution and low resolution images.
- Printing imported images on a Gimp preset (A4 or US-Letter) canvas and the effect of printer margins.

I'd like to knock out a few prints for friends and family and am looking for some advice on the size and resolution I need to be working at to give me a a print of 'wall-hangable' size (maybe 8 inches square).

I currently work at 600px square / 300 PPI, but converting px to inches seems to be far more confusing than I imagined.

Any and all advice very welcome.
