RE: Culture vs time - denzjos - 10-09-2024

As from 1965, Broodthaers made a series of assemblages using eggshells, mussel shells, bottles and bags of chips. In ‘Grand Casserole de Moules’ he combined crucial contrasts that he exploited throughout his oeuvre, such as nature v. culture, the ordinary v. art, functionality v. aesthetics, concrete things v. their meaning, and form v. content. In the case of this pot of mussels, Broodthaers spread confusion between ‘la moule’ (mussel) and ‘le moule’ (mould), which led to a wordplay that opened up a wide range of new possible meanings. For instance, the pot of mussels symbolises Belgium and its national culinary culture. It is no coincidence that ‘casserole’ is also French for ‘prostitute’ and in this case the mussel also refers to the female sex. Broodthaers considered the mussel to be independent, existing in its own shell, not allowing itself to be shaped in accordance with the whims of society, and in this sense it is perfect. The price for the pot was 250 000 euro.

Uh? Never heard that word with that meaning. The closest we have is "cagole" (vulgar/promiscuous girl) in Marseilles vernacular, and "passer à la casserole" (to be subject to sexual intercourse, consensual or not).

Me neither "casserole" as prostitute never heard that, ever.
Like Ofnuts, "cagole" in Marseille is a vulgar girl, especially when she speaks (we would say "when she opens her mouth", voluntarily not using the word "speak" Big Grin ) as well as her behavior, how she moves/act.
Same for "passer a la casserole" nothing to do with prostitution, sex yes, but it's not about prostitution, and we can use both wording in the same sentence "cette cagole va passer a la casserole" Big Grin (sorry, I could not hold the later Tongue )

This is madness...
Few questions, though Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
Did someone check if inside that pile there are mussels or are they just glued on a circular carton or whatnot, and inside it's empty?
Where come from the mussels, from a restaurant back trash or was it his personal consumption?
I hope that for this price the mussels are well cleaned and there are no residual animal in the shells, did someone check the "smell" Big Grin

The text is on the SMAK museum website. Apparently the artist had strange thoughts about his design. To say the least, everyone is a little eccentric in one way or another, isn't it?
