Hi Folks,
Although I moved to GIMP several years ago, I still keep tabs on Photoshop developments.
Just watched a vid ( https://petapixel.com/2017/09/14/using-l...ch-images/ ) from the Petapixel site, and was impressed with the results shown!
I opened up gimp 2.9.6 (Thanks, Partha!), but LAB mode was nowhere to be found B>(
Am I missing something, or is this feature to be found in a future release? . . .
Thanks, Barry

welcome to gimp-forum.net
Might be in the color-corrected-experimental which is still GIMP-2.9.5-cce-64bit.exe
Best ask on https://discuss.pixls.us/ Partha does visit there.

I had installed Partha's 2.9.5, but uninstalled it when installing his recent 2.9.6. I suspect that if it was in 2.9.5, it wouldn't have been taken out in .6. I have emailed him for his comments on this post, so I'll post his reply when received . . .B>)
Thanks for the quick reply!

BTW, I reply faster than I think! I did not install the color-corrected version, perhaps that is necessary!

Heard back from Partha, who agreed that Gimp had no LAB mode and suggested I try Decomposing to reach a LAB option for similar control - will try it out . .
Thanks to all,
Barry

Edit Reason: typo

Finally got around to viewing (almost-all) the video. Hate those PS ones, never know WTH is going on.
While regular Gimp does not have a dedicated LAB mode, the (rough) work flow can be paralleled using a couple of utilities.
G'mic plug-in http://www.gmic.eu does allow adjustment in LAB for color curves
a and b curves: https://i.imgur.com/RZWOiD6.jpg
and for the sky as well, the L curve: https://i.imgur.com/mKdoB5o.jpg
But that needs to be masked and the luminosity masks script can be used. see: https://patdavid.net/2013/11/getting-aro...masks.html

Thanks for the leads, Rich! The G'MIC link is particularly interesting, those folks update so often that it is hard to keep up! . . .
