Years since I did any of those. I think I used an ImageMagick script.
No real automatic way, Same place as last post but a plugin ofn_guillotine_layers

A bit more convenient than the regular guillotine. Image with suitable borders. First horizontally then vertically to get the 4 half layers.
Flip with the flip tool, Move out to the edge. The move tool moves quickly using shift-(cursor key),

For a non-exact (but interesting) fill, the resynthesizer + heal-transparency.py plugins. I suppose your images will be large, so this takes forever.
