After posting this question I went looking for information on the subject and found these - which seem to be the same kind of thing you've linked to - in other words brushes which just simulate the effect of brush strokes rather than you controlling it.

I've installed these but they're a bit tricky to use. You can't simply brush back and forth with them, or even brush in one direction as this results in a very obvious duplication of the texture, but if you use them like a stamp and vary the size, angle and type, it gives the desired effect.
