Thanks, Krikor, but I am looking for a far simpler effect--think of a pulp around 1930, printed on paper with the technique of the day.
So far, my best automatic approximation comes from the extrusion extension in Inkscape--one has to fill the paths for the thing to work.
This is the 'filling' variant (polygons)--variant lines is rather like path rungs with rungs on anchors…
Of course, any way one gets too many lines/polygons: too many anchors in the font path.
