Well I did it in response to your post and there is a time zone difference to take into account

The order of images in the stack is not essential but makes things easier. Toggle visibility to select layers before align 'rubber banding' bearing in mind top-to-bottom sorting. Need bottom left to right and up-over. When increasing the canvas size, position the stack in the bottom left corner and use a negative offset in the align tool. Play with the align distribution options. I have to confess, not my favourite Gimp tool.
