The Measure tool shows you distance and angle between two points:

   

You will note that Gimp and GoogleEarth don't agree on the heading(*). If you zoom in you will see that the yellow line from GE zigzags around the straight line from the Measure tool, because the line from GE is a projection of the orthodromic route, so GE's heading is more accurate that what you can measure in the map with external tools.

(*) Needless to say, I triple-checked that the map was upright before taking the screenshot.
