Gimp menus unusable

Just downloaded ver 2.10.38 for intel to run on my Macbook Pro with quad-core Intel core I7 running OS 11.1.10. I'd like to try out the program.

The program is unusable as all the menus, even the working in the startup banner look like this:
   

How can I fix this?
