As previous posts all sorts of ways to get a better result.
The color select tool has a mask option that adjusts the threshold value as you drag the mouse in the image. That gives possibly a better selection. As a (partial) example this 20 second animation https://i.imgur.com/v3Fay38.mp4
The snag with that is it might remove color in the subject. For that, a tidy up using the quick mask is used to paint out any non-required selection. https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-using-quickmask.html
