Trying to keep out of this but my euros worth and one problem is...

A friend is a lecturer (archaeology) at a local university. Adobe (and Microsoft) give them and the students free/reduced rate software. Any papers for publication have to be in Word / PS / Illustrator stipulated by University. So that 99% is just a culture, it could just as easily be LibreOffice / Gimp / Inkscape.
Really not interested in A is better than B. Gimp is just a tool much the same as a hand saw, some cut by pushing, some cut by pulling. The end result is the same.
(I actually opened a CMYK image in PS7 (linux using WINE) yesterday to check a Gimp3 export that looked odd in an image viewer. Not a nice experience but then I gave up PS 20 years ago
