Probably the version of Gimp you have installed, 2.10.36 That is the default version for ubuntu 24.04 and probably the snap version if you used the ubuntu software center. Do you know is it is a snap ?

The flatpak version from gimp.org
or

otherwise back to using the color-curves tool.
This version of GIMP came as default when I installed Ubuntu 24.04.
I haven't tried it. Whether adjusting the values on the table to see the change on the image?
Besides whether you suggested trying Ofnuts' suggestion?
I have hundreds of negatives to convert. I'm searching for simple and straight-forwards solution, if possible.
